Kendo means "Way of the Sword". It is a traditional Japanese martial art of sword-fighting which was developed as a safe way for Samurai to practice their swordsmanship.
Dublin Kendo Kobukai is excited to invite you to a Kendo Open Class on Saturday, October 5th, from 13:30 to 15:30 at the Ballybough Community Centre!
This Open Day Class is intended to provide you with a firsthand experience of kendo before our next Beginners Course starts in January 2025.
All of the instructors in our Beginners Course have achieved at least the ranking of 5th Dan in kendo, have multiple years of kendo coaching experience, and have represented Ireland in multiple international competitions abroad.
Here’s what to expect:
First Experience: Try out the basics of kendo with guidance from our experienced instructors.
Meet the Club: Get to know our members and learn more about what makes our club special.
Decide What’s Next: After the session, you can decide whether to join us now or wait for the next Beginners Course in January.
13:30 - 15:30
The Ballybough Community
Youth & Sports Centre,
49 Ballybough Road,
Ballybough,
Dublin 3
Please try to arrive at least 10 minutes before the start time indicated above. One of our course instructors or regular club members will help you find your way around the hall.
You don’t need to bring any specific equipment for training, but we recommend that you wear comfortable sports clothes. There are changing facilities at our training locations in case you need to switch into gear. Please also be aware that kendo is traditionally practised barefoot.
Please be aware that while this open day is directed at beginners, kendo is still a full-contact physical activity, and therefore you should inform yourself of the risks involved (particularly if you have any existing medical conditions).
The event is free of charge, but spaces are limited, so please register in advance using the Adult Form - here.
Please note that participants under 16 years of age must be accompanied by an adult and should fill out the Junior Form - here.
The following are some recent clips from our seminars and public demonstrations.
